The Spanish Journal of Disability (REDIS) is a scientific electronic journal intended to publish articles of academic, scientific and professional research or reflection on disability from a multidisciplinary approach. It is an open access, peer-reviewed journal that, from a multidisciplinary perspective, seeks to be an international reference.

REDIS is promoted by the Royal Board on Disability and the Directorate-General for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities of the Ministry of Social Rights and the 2030 Agenda. It is coordinated and edited by one of its advisory centers, the Spanish Centre for Documentation and Research on Disability (CEDID) . In this sense, it is the only Spanish scientific journal on disability published by a public body.

REDIS aims to achieve the highest possible quality in the manuscripts it publishes by applying the evaluation criteria that govern scientific journals. Likewise, it is constantly reviewing and improving its article selection and evaluation procedures. In this regard, it requests that published articles follow the IMRyD structure and include title, abstract and keywords in Spanish and English.

In keeping with its clear international vocation, REDIS promotes a plural approach in terms of topics, authors, reviewers and audience and facilitates the publication of original articles in English as well as Spanish. All articles are available online and free of charge to the scientific community and researchers worldwide.

PUBLICATION FRECUENCY:
The journal is published every six months. It is structured as an annual volume, with two editions, released in June and December, respectively.

MISSION AND VISION:

Mission: To publish original articles on the subject of disability from a scientific perspective, refereed by a committee of internationally recognized peers. The published works are characterized by their theoretical and methodological soundness, their timeliness and practical relevance about those phenomena, factors or elements that affect this field.

Vision: To be the international reference for scientific publications on disability, with high standards of quality and methodological rigor.

OBJECTIVES:

  • Provide a reflection and analysis framework on disability from different scientific areas and disciplines, primarily from the social sciences.
  • Promote the creation and dissemination of theoretical and applied knowledge in disability under scientific quality criteria.
  • To contribute to the effective fulfillment of the human rights of persons with disabilities recognized in the International Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities through scientific research.
  • Provide a space to publish research work on disability.
  • Promote research from a gender and intersectional perspective.
  • To promote research on disability at the international level.

VALUES:

  • Impartiality: objectivity in the articles' assessment. Papers undergo a peer review process, whose phases, possible results and how controversial cases are solved are established publicly.
  • Independence: the editorial body supervises the scientific quality of the published manuscripts, but their contents are the authors' sole responsibility.
  • Plurality: the journal's multidisciplinary nature and independence in publishing content enable a variety of views, approaches and opinions that promote academic discussion.
  • Social responsibility: commitment to the progress concerning the rights and inclusion of people with disabilities and raising awareness in society to contribute to the development and improvement of the quality of life of everyone under the same conditions.
  • Diversity: the conviction that heterogeneity and respect for diversity enrich all spheres and are the basis for social progress.
  • Quality and scientific discipline: this is endorsed by a meticulous peer-review process and specific criteria for assessing the different aspects of the published articles.
  • Innovation: focus on the originality of proposals, views and approaches as a critical factor in selecting articles for publication.
  • Internationality: with a clear international vocation in its themes, authors, reviewers and audience, the publication of original articles in English and translation of original articles in Spanish into English to facilitate their international dissemination.
  • Gender equality: we promote research developed with a gender focus and carried out by women.

REDIS is committed to equality between men and women through the following practices:

  • We guarantee a minimum percentage of 40% of women in the composition of the Editorial Board, the Advisory Board and the people who evaluate the originals sent to the journal.
  • The editorial coordinator, the editorial secretaries, the editors and the layout designer are all women.
  • Use of inclusive and non-sexist language.(The UNESCO guide Recommendations for a non-sexist use of language is recommended).
  • Identification of authorship: The full name of the authors is included in all articles, Tribune and reviews.
  • Gender perspective in research: We especially value those papers that take into account the sex variable, in order to allow the identification of possible differences, as well as those papers whose contents, objectives and methodology promote a critical analysis.

Institución editora

The Royal Board on Disability and the Directorate-General for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities promote the Spanish Journal on Disability.

El Royal Board on Disability is an autonomous body attached to the Ministry of Social Rights and Agenda 2030, whose purpose is the promotion and improvement of the rights of persons with disabilities, as well as their personal development, social inclusion and prevention of disabilities through the planning of policies, strategies, plans and programmes related to disability.

For its part, the Directorate-General for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in Spain is the management body of the Secretary of State for Social Rights of the Ministry of Social Rights and Agenda 2030 responsible for developing government policies related to disability.

The Spanish Centre for Documentation and Research on Disability (CEDID), an advisory centre to the Royal Board on Disability, coordinates the journal.

The Spanish Journal of Disability (REDIS) first edition was published in 2013. REDIS achieved its inclusion in some of the main indexing systems, databases, and national and international directories during the first years.

In 2018, the journal renewed its design, and in 2019 it was updated to version 3 of Open Journal Systems (OJS), which brought improvements in security and efficiency and a more agile and accessible user experience. This year it also obtained the quality seal for scientific journals awarded by the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT).

In 2020 REDIS incorporates new improvements such as the drafting of a more comprehensive Editorial Policy, new quality criteria aligned with the standards of the main indexing systems, the incorporation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the 2030 Agenda - in which disability is a cross-cutting issue - and the gender perspective in its topics of interest.
